Fit for Golf
Last month the three main areas used when striking a golf ball were tested to see how they could be improved. This time stretches will be prescribed to promote better flexibility around the joints. Equally important will be to maintain and recover balance in the range of movement from opposite sides. These stretches are better performed with the help of a partner but can be done by yourself. For increased turn in the back, choose which side you need to improve. Start by lying on the floor with the arm of the side you are not stretching out at shoulder height. Drop the knees away from that arm and place the other hand on the top of the knees. Pull the knees further to the ground but onlyas far as it will go without the arm on the floor moving. Hold this position for up to 30 seconds. If the legs will then go more towards the floor then repeat the stretch. Always keep the opposite arm and shoulder down. Hip rotation is crucial to keeping the body under control during the swing. As with the last stretch make sure only the worse side is getting stretched. Stand at the bottom of a set of stairs and turn to the side. To stretch the outside of the hip move the outer foot across the body and place it on a step that is not too high or low. Turn the body away from the step and experience a comfortable stretch on the inside of the hip. To stretch the inside of the hip place the near foot on the step and turn the body away from the stairs. Make sure the body is upright throughout. Hold each stretch for up to 30 seconds and repeat if the body manages to turn a little more. If your balance is not too good then make sure you are holding onto something, just to make a safety point. For anyone who has hip problems or replacements refrain from performing these exercises and contact fit-foregolf to obtain alterative stretches. The most comfortable way to stretch the neck is to lie on the back and turn the head to the side. Always have the neck straight. That is with the chin not too high or low. This is achieved with towels placed under the back of the head. Turn the head to the side that is tight and not both sides. Put the hand of the opposite side of the body on the chin. Lightly ease the head round to get a slight stretch. Hold for up to 30 seconds and if the head
turns a bit further, without any discomfort, then repeat. For all your golfing fitness needs contact Terry on 081-009-6588 or have a look at the website. www.fit-foregolf.com

Butterfly Rock Golf Club
BUTTERFLY ROCK GOLF The rainy season is certainly upon us now and completing competitions is becoming a matter of good fortune with the weather. Some of our recent results have been rain affected, as the list below will reflect. Our principal Competition in May was for the Whippet Trophy presented by
Paul Frampton and fought for at Majestic Creek by teams of two on a better ball format. It was barely rain-affected and all 14 teams completed the course, which was in excellent condition. There was quiet confidence on the 19th on the part of the trophy donor and his partner Phil Simons sitting on 45 points with Kevin Dwyer (one of the trophy holders) and Bill Henderson on 43 points, then in second place. However, in the final group, appeared Alan Rawson and Andy Bayes (appropriately riding in a buggy named Black Bess) with a massive 52 points which comfortably won the day. It should be mentioned that, as part of his provision of the Trophy and sponsorship for the day, Paul also most generously paid for all food and drink consumed on the 19th hole. As members will imagine, for some of us, the
19th extended for as long as the first 18 and definitely more pleasurably! Mention must be made of two events in June. The principal Trophy will be the Rhino Trophy donated by the late Steve Ross, which will be fought for on the 25th at Lake View under the Bogey format. Klaus Kristensen won last year with a massive 6 up performance and will doubtless be keen to hold on to it. The other, for us unusual, arrangement is that on the 11th we plan a trip to Royal Ratchaburi and hope to link this with an overnight stay in the area with a view to playing Dragon Hills on the 12th. Hopefully, the details will be confirmed before this issue is published but please
let a Committee member know if you wish to play – accommodation must be reserved. Sadly, Kevin Dwyer has decided that his many other varied interests must take priority and he has resigned from the Committee. His boundless enthusiasm will be much missed and we should all be most grateful to him for single-handedly setting up and maintaining our most professional website. He will continue to play his golf with us and lend support where necessary. Finally, your Committee will, by the time you (both) read this article, have prepared and booked the Golf Club Calendar for
the year from November 2008. A new Fixtures and Members list will be printed and available for resident and returning members in a month or so. A cautionary note – fixtures set out months ahead are subject to the vagaries of the Thai Golf course booking and record system (?) and there may well be several variations. Please check with the online booking schedules at our website (www.brgc.biz) and be aware of these changes as they occur. Brgc Results

On The Green
Good news for local golfers. The Banyan Golf Course, south of Hua Hin, will be
ready for competition on 1 August. The site has been created out of a pineapple plantation tucked in between one small mountain and a large mountain range that will be the backdrop to this cours of 7,030 to 5,310 yards par 72 with four sets of tees.
The signature 15th hole features a view of the sea (with Lion Island) behind and a panoramic vista of mountains ahead, and the course was designed by Pirapon Namatra, Managing Director of GolfEast. Khun Pirapon emphasised a natural
approach in building the course and spent many days walking the entire site before refining his final design. And because of this thorough assessment he has developed a course that uses the natural contours of the existing terrain and is minimally invasive to the surroundings. He was also able to have the course built with only about 5 per cent of the normal amount of excavation and land moving used in standard construction of golf courses; with a high percentage of the rebuilding on the tee boxes and greens. There will be five or six different tee boxes for every hole. His choice of native zoysia grass for fairways and rough was also inspired: it is native and disease-resistant and requires much less water than most other turf grasses. In other words it is very ecologically friendly. This is the same turf that you will find at Majestic, which
True to its name, there are several Banyan trees dotting the venue, and pineapples still grow around edges of the course. There are a few lakes but they were not a predominate factor in the design. Khun Pirapon hopes that this will be a
pleasant respite from most golf courses in Thailand. The clubhouse is a 22,000 square feet all-teak wooden building with unique Thai roof design that was originally sited in Petchburi, some 100 kilometres away. The Banyan Club bought it, dismantled it, and had it re-assembled in Hua Hin. It comprises the clubhouse, pro shop and a five-star restaurant. A separate public house (pub) will soon be added to the facilities.
Banyan Golf Club is situated on the backside of the Banyan Housing Estate, which has been developed on a total land area of 270 Rai (approximately 432,000 square metres). The estate contains 85 houses, 166 villas and 204 condominiums/apartments available for sale. The CD investment houses boast a total living area of 120 square metres and the villas range in size from 120 to 870 sq/m of living area. The condos have a living area ranging from 85 to265 square metres. There are also plans for a high-class shopping/commercial area to be built in front of the housing estate.
All that needs to be done now is to construct a proper paved access road from Petchkasem Road to the course. The venue can be accessed from the main road just after the overpass leading to Pranburi, heading south, and is well sign-posted. The Banyan Golf Club (Hua Hin) Co. Ltd 104 Moo 9, Tab Tai, Hua Hin,

TIP OF THE MONTH
Playing from uneven lies. Golf courses are rarely completely flat, so inevitably you are going to be faced with
uneven lies. The ball might be above or below your feet, or, even worse, in a combination of side hill and either uphill or downhill. Whatever the situation, the solution is the same: Create as much as possible, a flat lie. In other words, keep your spine in the same relationship to the slope as you would for a flat lie. If the ball isbelow your feet, bend forward more; if the ball is above your feet, lean back a little; if your left foot is lower than your right, tilt left; if your right foot is lower than your left, tilt right. That’s how to beat the slopes! Are you cheating at golf? From 1st January 2008 the rules of golf changed and a large number of Drivers became illegal.
A recent study showed that illegal drivers gave the average golfer about 7 to 10 extra yards per drive, not much but where does it stop. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews had to step in and limit not only the size of the clubhead but the C.O.R, which is an acronym for coefficient of restitution. What is C.O.R? I hear you say. Coefficient of restitution is a measurement of the energy loss or retention when two objects collide. The COR measurement is always expressed as a number between 0.000 (meaning all energy is lost in the collision) and 1.000 (which means a perfect elastic collision in which all energy is transferred from one object to the other).
Without going into too much detail an example of a COR of 0.000 would be if a very sticky piece of chewing gum collided with a similar piece. The two pieces would collide and stick together and not move forward. The closest example in sports to a COR of 1.000 would be in pool or billiards when the cue ball collides squarely with a target ball, the cue ball stops dead and the target ball takes off at almost the same exact speed. The current R&A rule limiting the coefficient of restitution states that the COR cannot be higher than a measurement of 0.830. To give a frame of reference for performance, with a driver the difference in carry distance between a head with a COR of 0.820 and another head with a COR of 0.830 would be 4.2 yards for a swing speed of 100mph. So lets get back to the original question. When the R&A brings out a new rule it is usually to protect the integrity and stature of the game. Not only is golf the most honest of sports, but also it is the only game that you play basically against yourself. You may not know that your Driver is illegal. It is easy to check by going onto the R&A website and looking at the list of nonconforming MUST change it. Don’t and you are cheating not only yourself but also your fellow competitors and playing partners. I for one could not imagine scoring my best score ever and knowing that I was using an illegal club. There would always be that doubt in my mind (and everybody else’s!)John Wither is a PGA Golf Professional and former Asian Tour player. He is currently head teacher at the Hua Hin Academy of Golf located at the Mongkol Driving Range, Nong Plab Road, Hua Hin .For bookings please phone 0811 426 216
