HHAD Hua Hin Online Community

As usual the Songkran festivities last month went off with a blast, downtown Hua Hin was a throng of activity over the main wet day on the 13th. Fortunately for many though the water throwing only lasted one day in Hua Hin and life returned to normal on the Monday. A couple of the braver members took a stroll around town and caught some of the action on camera; the results are on the forum. The town has been busy last month but mainly with Thais from the big city enjoying a number of public holidays.

Although Hua Hin is definitely slowing down in terms of tourism the forums remain busy as ever with a lot of often heated debate on issues revolving around life in Thailand. Many of the topics discussed affect most expats living here, which is why they can frequently go on for several pages online. Both pros and cons of life in Hua Hin are examined by those that live here, those that want to and those that simply enjoy the destination as a holiday. Many quickly realize that the holiday romance with the place can rapidly give way to a more frustrating experience when living here full time. That said though it is still one of the best places in the region to be based, which is why foreigners continue to flock to Hua Hin.

Crime seems to be an emerging problem also with more reports of break-ins, bag snatches, and attacks than ever before. It’s no surprise that more housing developments and seemingly affluent inhabitants will attract the less desirable elements of society preying on them. One hope that all Hua Hin residents have is that the local police force will actually do something about it and there will be more after dark patrols in areas where burglaries and attacks have been reported. Presently this does remain a high hope though.

The number of restaurant reviews online is certainly increasing though not all are favourable to the establishment. Reports of rude and inept staff are common with some of the western managed restaurants though to counter it there are also glowing reviews of the cuisine in many of them so get out and about and make up your own mind! As the number of foreigners in Hua Hin increases so does the demand for quality western food, many are still falling short of the mark however things are slowly changing. Fortunately there is no shortage of good Thai food outlets with Hua Hin being one of the best places in the Kingdom for fresh seafood.

The musical season is in full swing with Honda Summer Music Fest on Saturday May 17th in Khao Takiab. A 12 hour solid music venue will be showcasing a number of popular Thai bands and artists so get yourself down there to take in the ambiance. HHAD is usually the first place to get information on local events, the major one of the year being the Jazz Festival, which will be held on June 13th to 14th. It looks like they are going back to two beach stages and a “Jazz Alley” again this year following the overcrowding problems at last year’s single stage event. As always book early if you need accommodation this weekend.

Property discussion has been picking up with more questions on condos and some interesting information on taxable earnings from property sales profit. As we know getting funds out of Thailand has never been easy and requires a mountain of paperwork but it can be done providing you stick to procedure. There are some very knowledgeable contributors to the property section who can put you in the right direction.

A number of questions arose regarding employment opportunities and starting a business for foreigners in Hua Hin. Sadly the red tape and bureaucracy involved with this is getting worse by the month and the impression we get is that the government really do not want foreigners working here; they’re more interested in retirees and incoming finances from overseas.
As usual we had a wide array of requests in the Expats section ranging from halogen lights to embroidery to snake removals – whatever your question you’ll find the answer on HHAD!

HHAD forums are the definitive online message boards and discussions for the area with over 3,300 members. There are sections for finding and booking accommodation, seeking out bargains, and exploring the local area and beyond. There is also a nightlife section for the night owls, a restaurant and feeding guide along with an online meeting point for visa runners and clubs. The ever popular “Ask the expats” section is great for quickly getting the answers you need from the people that live here.

Snapshot Of The Mayor In Waiting

The Observer recently had the chance to interview Khun Jira Pongpaiboon, who is again running for local office in the forthcoming elections. Khun Jira was born in Hua Hin in 1935 into a fishing family and went on to manage his own construction company and computer shop (IT Pawin). He has been Municipality Mayor twice already, and has put himself up for election to this office on 11 May. If elected, his area of responsibility will be the 86.3 square kilometres running from the airport at Bo Fai to Khao Takiab.

He emphasised particular problems needing attention including upgrading the water supply and placing more lights in poorly lit areas of town. He went on to say, that new road development should hopefully ease traffic congestion that builds up at weekends and national holidays.  Perhaps the most interesting scheme for tourists and visitors to Hua Hin is a plan to make the whole town a free wireless Internet zone. (Something known as a Wi-Fi ‘Hot Spot’). Visitors can get their laptops online without plugging into telephone jacks in any restaurant or hotel lobby, and then go ahead and surf, send e-mail or work. If achieved, this will be a first for any town or city in Thailand.

Also planned is a new large amusement and water park for family use, a sports stadium and a new airport separate from the current one north of town. Khun Jira hopes to tackle Hua Hin’s flooding problem, increase the amount of tourist attractions and provide more schools with good teachers for local children. He also has a strategy to increase police presence around the town to deter crime, which has been on the increase of late.  Other items on Khun Jira’s wishlist are a one-stop service centre for advice on Thai law, a similar centre open 24 hours dealing with emergencies, a solution to the rubbish/garbage situation and fair local tax system to fund the necessary infrastructure improvements and maintenance.

Swan Dive (U.S.A.)

Modern Dog (Thai)
Style: Rock/Pop
From their slogan, “Rock Never Die, Dog Never Lie”, Modern Dog has proved they are one of the biggest rock bands in the country since 1994. Started out as a college band winning a music contest, the Coke Music Awards, in 1992, Modern Dog teamed up with a very talented producer, Sukie Kamol Sukosol Clapp, releasing their eponymous first album. The result was an album that had a mix of Funky, Soul, Modern Rock, and Grunge sounds that flipped the Thai music industry forever. “We just played what we felt.” Pod, the band’s front man, said, “and that kicked lots of asses! We had no idea we would get such a tremendous outcome.”  And quickly, the album has become one of the greatest rock albums of all time in Thai music history opening opportunities for hundreds of other rock bands entering into the market.
They followed the smash debut album with three more hugely successful albums - Caf, (1997), Love Me Love My Life (2001) and That Song (2004). They also performed a series of acoustic concerts called “The Very Common of Moderndog”, showcasing a softer side, much like Nirvana had with their ‘Unplugged’ concert. Whether we will see this side of Modern Dog, or their previous style, with Pod showcasing his bold acrobatic moves and vocal fireworks, while May-T hits the audience in a wash of creative sound effects, while drummer, Pong, never misses a beat, moving in a blur of total syncopation, we will have to wait and see! Whatever style is on show no one should miss the chance to see Modern Dog.

Agrikulture (Indonesia)
Style: Dance
Agrikulture’s dynamic musical vision has captivated concert halls and dance floors around Indonesia and the region. Combining retro modern electronic sounds with edgy rock, funk and soul rhythms. They’ve collaborated and performed with the best artists Indonesia has to offer (i.e. Slank, Indra Lesmana & Reborn, Kris Dayanti, RIF, Ari Lasso, Syaharani, Shanty, Maliq and D’essentials) and were chosen as the opening act for the Prodigy show and as Indonesia’s ambassador for the massive Good Vibrations Festival in Singapore alongside the Beastie Boys and Cut Copy and Malaysia’s biggest festival Recharge Revelation 5 Global Gathering in Melaka, Malaysia alongside Blackstrobe, Simian Mobile Disco and Jungle Brothers.
Agrikulture was first formed by Anton Wirjono (DJ Anton) and DJ Aditya, together they started by remixing influential Indonesian pop bands and playing live sets in clubs. Then DJ Hogi returned from San Francisco, with an arsenal of producing know how and musical experience; their musical explorations became something more of a phenomena. These three turned ears with their chart topping remix of Disko Di Rumah and turned heads with their eye-catching performances. Staying true to their roots, Agrikulture also performs decks & fx dj sets combining their mad skills with live synthesis and sampling mayhem. Agrikulture recently recruited two new members, lead vocalist Irfandy aka FanDFMC an icon in the indie scene and two times best MC (Paranoia Awards) and Emil Pahlevi on guitars.  Agrikulture’s new live format accompanied by amazing visual artistry marks a new beginning for the band. Agrikulture’s debut album “Dawai Damai” came out on July 7th 2007 in Indonesia through Aquarius Musikindo and produced by Future10 music.  The new album is loaded with fresh new tracks and wicked collaborations with Tika, Indra Aziz, Jason Tedjasukmana and Edo Wallad of The Safari.

Job 2 Do / Job Banjop (Thai)
Style: Reggae
Job is a singer and musician, born in Trang, Thailand, and mostly performs reggae. Original nickname was Jop, and he has spent his life playing music in public parks, charity concerts and also at a festival in Newcastle, England. For 17 years all of his foreign music friends called him Job, so he decided to change his performance name to Job. He got an award for Best Street Musician at the Royal Hall Glasgow, Scotland. His debut album was released by GMM Grammy. He is married to Dorothy Lemanczyk form The Netherlands and they now live in Krabi.

Lydia (Thai)
Style: R & B
Known by her fans as the “Princess of R&B” because of her talent and vocal style, Lydia’s first album was released by RS Promotion.

Mr.Z (Thai)
Style: Pop
Known mainly for his production work with Bakery Music and Dojo City Record, Mr Z has brought a number of bands including Triumph Kingdom, Project H and Niece to the attention of Thailand. He has now formed a new company, in cooperation with his sister, “Plenty Music” and released his latest album working with famous artists such as Q (Lead vocalist form Flure).

T-Bone(Thai)
Style: Reggae/Ska
T-Bone started their band by performing at The Blue Moon and Blue Jeans Pub & Café. The name of the band comes from the jeans brand one member of the band designs and sells. Following that the band performed with Tee Chaiyadej at Saxophone Pub & Café 20 years ago.
Producer/musician/singer Jik Papas Cholsaranont saw the band and approached them to work with him, and they released their first album on Muser and Warner Music (Thailand). They had a hit single called “Ter Hen Tong Fah Nan Mai” from the first album, and the band become popular in Thailand when their third album was released including the hit single “ Raeng Deung Dood”.
The band was devastated when “Ple” who sing their first hit single was involved in a car accident and died, and shortly afterwards their contract with Muser and Warner Music (Thailand) was not renewed. Fortunately they were able to continue and signed with Sony Music (Thailand) and released their fourth album including the hit singles call “Dao Tok”, “Kod” and “Klin”, and followed that with the release of a special Acoustic Album.
When the band left Sony they formed their own record company “Hua Lam Phong Riddim” and released their fifth album “Live”, although by now several members of the band had their own solo projects, but they still play music together.
In September 2005 T-Bone performed at the outdoor music festival in Glastonbury, England and in mid 2006 T-Bone performed at the Womad Music Festival in Singapore.
Their latest album is “Enjoy Yourself ”.

Lipta (Thai)
Style: R&B/Pop
Lipta are a pop duo who produced and released their debut single by themselves, which then became a radio hit. They were then contacted by Boyd Kosiyapong, a famous producer, singer and musician from LoveIs Records and were signed to Lovels.

Pete Pera (Thai)
(Former member of PeaceMaker)
Style: Pop
A pop singer and musician, Pete spent many years working with GMM Grammy and his debut album was a collaboration with Boy, another member of PeaceMaker).
Decided to separate from GMM Grammy and work on his own, releasing his new album on Guess Music Record.

Mai Charoenpura (Thai)
Style: Pop/Rock
Her first album on GMM Grammy sold over 800,000 copies, and earned her an award for Best New Singer form Season Magazine.
Her third album sold over 500,000 copies in only 10 days with the total sold to date over 2.5 million copies, and so becoming the first Thai female singer to sell over 2 million copies of a single album. Her latest album (her eighth) was released in 2006.

Laughs aplenty at Hot Property

Live stand-up comedy hit Hua Hin like a freight train on 19 March when a gifted trio of gagsters entertained a sell-out crowd at the Hot Property offices on Damnern Kasem Road. The somewhat cramped venue with around 120 people in the audience rocked to laughter as Zoe Lyons, Jim Tavare and Aussie Wayne Deakin gave us their quirky asides in a lively two-hour session.
Ms Lyons (“When I’ve had too many drinks, I’m just a pissed-up version of Cherie Blair”) was the link artist, and no one was spared the verbal barbs, especially when Wayne Deakin let rip. Americans, Italians, Germans and the French came in for some good-natured verbal abuse, and any hecklers who dared to fight back were very smartly put down.
It was truly an adult night, definitely not tailored for stuffed-shirts. As Mr Deakin said, “I’m going to be doing a lot of swearing tonight, ladies and gentlemen, ‘cos I’m an Australian. And good at it!”
Jim Tavare (‘The Tommy Cooper of his generation’) had a unique routine involving a double bass, a succession of sight gags, and his own sly wit.
The only drawback was the inadequate toilet facilities as (to be fair) the room was never designed to hold so many people, all supping drinks from the bar and then inevitably needing to take a leak during the evening.
There was talk afterwards of this talented trio coming back next year. Let’s hope that they can make it - and perform their slick routines before a larger audience in a much bigger venue.

BANGKOK BUZZ

“Black is the New Green”
An exhibition by Cayla Skillin-Brauchle and JJ Gregg - May 2-June 1 2008.
The work of two emerging American artists will be featured in the upcoming May exhibition, “Black is the New Green,” at the Rotunda and Garden Gallery.  Printmaker Cayla Skillin-Brauchle and Photographer J.J. Gregg create a dynamic portrayal of plants that is larger than life.  Skillin-Brauchle’s whimsical and detailed woodblock prints illustrate how plants grow in, throughout and over the city, while Gregg’s black and white photographs capture the unique characteristics that make plants inspiring.
Over the last year Cayla Skillin-Brauchle has been working on a series of woodblock prints that visually and conceptually explore plants growing in modern cities.  While living and working in Bangkok she has become acutely aware of the private and public attempts to infuse city life with growing things.  From the latticed gardens at bus stops to the collections of potted plants and trees on everyone’s balcony, rooftop or stoop, Bangkok truly is a city obsessed with green.  Skillin-Brauchle has an art degree from Beloit College, Wisconsin USA and has had several group exhibitions in the American Midwest.  This is her first exhibition in Bangkok.
J.J. Gregg began this series of photographs after moving to Thailand in 2006.  This series is an attempt to capture the complexity implied by the plant kingdom’s ubiquitous success through a stylized photographic rendering. These photographs allow him to share naturally occurring rarities that could inspire but quickly disappear.  Gregg has been taking photographs for 10 years.  This is also his first exhibition in Bangkok.
Skillin-Brauchle and Gregg have lived in Bangkok for nearly two years.  During the daytime Gregg teaches math and economics at the American School of Bangkok, Sukhumvit while Skillin-Brauchle teaches swimming for Bangkok Dolphins.
The Rotunda Gallery & the Garden Galleries are at the Neilson Hays Library, 195 Surawong Road, Bangkok
(Tel. 02 233 1731) and it’s opening hours are: Tuesday-Sunday 9.30 am - 5.00 pm.

Benni Chawes (Vocal Jazz)
Benni Chawes is know as the Human Bass because of his extraordinary ability to use his voice to make instrumental sounds. Chawes sings the bass, drums, percussion, synth, guitar, tuba etc. all produced with his voice. In performance as Human Bass, Chawes rouses his audiences, mixing different instrumental sounds into the course of a tune, and performs thrilling vocal bass and percussion combinations. Chawes plays with funk grooves and percussive “slap bass” solos and fill-ins; smooth and complex walking bass lines; fretless, electric solos; and “plays” instrumental-like be-bob solos with sounds like synth, guitar- and horn-synth all with the voice. Human Bass is backed up by traditional instruments, performing in duo or combo settings, which throws an exhilarating twist to traditional orchestration. Performing in a solo setting as well illustrates Chawes’ capacity of being up to four instruments at the same time.
Benni Chawes is also a great Danish jazz singer; seductive and masculine, as velvety soft as Barry White spiked with dashes of Tony Bennett, Al Jarreau and Bill Withers. He is performing in Thailand on a promotional tour from 7th 14th May, with a concert in Bangkok at the Main Hall of the Thailand Cultural Centre in Ratchadapisek Rd. on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 from 19.00 hrs. Tickets are priced between 1,000 and 3,000 baht and are available from Thai Ticketmajor (www.thaiticketmajor.com/concert/colouryourlife4_eng.php).

Spacious Building Project
Real Estate company Blom Residence was established in 2006, it’s owner Mr Alexander Blom is a 57 year old Dutchman, who was a managing director of an international company, which meant he travelled widely all over the world. He had been looking for a pleasant and warm base to escape the long, cold Dutch winters. It was love at first sight on arrival in Hua Hin, and Mr Blom decided to build his own property just outside town at Baan Kontong. On the adjacent plots he started to develop a project which offered large sites and a free choice of design. This first project is already complete.
Lotus Residence, the second project, consists of nine plots with a selection of own design building possibilities. Therefore for an investment of 9,500,000 Baht you can have a home of your own design on a 1,200 sq m plot, with a pool and landscaped gardens.
The charm of this project is the mix of styles set in spacious gardens, but with a uniform wall surround.
On hand are two very experienced Thai architects to assist you in the design, or to help adapt other designs to suit your requirements.
The company policy is quality, only using the best materials, which gives a worry free investment.
A third project is in a tropical park which offers 4 large villas and 4 bunaglows the owners of which can share a jointly owned swimming pool. This Rose Residence offers privacy around the home, but with the chance to socialise with your neighbours around the pool. Again the architects can help adjust the lay outs to suit you and your family.
If you live overseas there is an English building advisor who can keep you in touch with the building process with regular updates via email.
The site will offer an office and shop for the convenience of the owners, cleaning and maintenance can be arranged through the office. For those wishing to rent out their property a rental organisation will assist.
Blom Residence works with local specialists and shows due respect for the environment.
For more information visit their website: www.blomresidence.com.
